Summary
George Orwell presents a world, Oceania, where the people are under the constant surveillance of their omnipresent government through the telescreens and the Thought Police. This is best conveyed with the book’s famous line “BIG BROTHER IS WATCHING YOU”, which become synonymous with life without freedom. The protagonist, Winston Smith wrestles with oppression in Oceania. Defying a ban on individuality, Winston dares to express his thoughts in a diary and pursues a relationship with Julia. These criminal deeds bring Winston into the eye of the opposition, who then must reform the nonconformist. Will Winston succeed in his goals?
“The book of the twentieth century…..haunts us with an ever darker relevance.” – Independent
Why should you read this book?
The dystopia in Oceania is all too applicable to today’s world. The telescreens and hidden microphones bring to mind Apple’s Siri and Amazon’s Echo; while Thought Police is taking shape in North Korea. 1984 may seem unthinkable in 1984 but not now. Besides the relevance of its content to the world, Orwell’s skillful portrayal of the themes and characteristics presents a literary feast. As you read the book, ponder how mankind may in fact be opening the Pandora’s Box to the Orwellian world – where BIG BROTHER IS WATCHING YOU
